H. Pylori IgA

What is an H. pylori IgA test?

The H. pylori IgA test is a blood test that detects immunoglobulin A (IgA) antibodies produced by the immune system against Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori).

H. pylori is a bacterium that can infect the stomach and is commonly associated with gastritis and peptic ulcer disease. Some people with H. pylori infection have no symptoms, while others may experience stomach pain, indigestion, nausea, or bloating.

IgA antibodies are part of the body's immune response, particularly at mucosal surfaces such as the digestive tract.

What is the H. pylori IgA test used for?

The test may be used to:

Detect an immune response to H. pylori

Support the evaluation of suspected H. pylori infection

Assess H. pylori exposure together with other antibody tests

Provide additional information when interpreted with H. pylori IgG and other clinical findings

However, H. pylori IgA testing alone cannot reliably determine whether an infection is currently active.

Tests that directly detect the organism, such as the H. pylori stool antigen test or urea breath test, are generally preferred when active infection needs to be established.

Why do I need an H. pylori IgA test?

Your healthcare provider may request this test if you have symptoms that could be associated with H. pylori infection, including:

Upper abdominal pain or discomfort

Burning or aching stomach pain

Indigestion

Bloating

Nausea

Frequent belching

Loss of appetite

Recurrent stomach symptoms

It may also be ordered as part of a broader evaluation for gastritis or peptic ulcer disease.

What happens during the test?

A small blood sample is collected from a vein in your arm.

The serum is tested using an immunological method to determine whether IgA antibodies against H. pylori are present.

Depending on the laboratory's assay, the result may be reported as Positive/Negative or as a numerical antibody value with a laboratory-specific cutoff.

Will I need to do anything to prepare?

Usually, no fasting or special preparation is required.

Tell your healthcare provider about any previous diagnosis or treatment for H. pylori, because previous infection and treatment can affect antibody results.

Are there any risks?

The test involves a routine blood collection. You may experience minor discomfort, bruising, or tenderness at the collection site.

Serious complications are very uncommon.

What do the results mean?

Positive result

A positive H. pylori IgA result means that IgA antibodies against H. pylori were detected.

This may indicate:

Current or recent H. pylori infection

An immune response associated with H. pylori exposure

However, a positive IgA result does not by itself prove that active infection is present. Antibody responses can vary between individuals, and antibodies may persist after infection.

A positive result should therefore be interpreted together with symptoms, medical history, and other H. pylori tests.

Negative result

A negative result means that H. pylori IgA antibodies were not detected at the level measurable by the assay.

This may indicate that there is no detectable IgA response to H. pylori. However, a negative result does not completely exclude infection, particularly when clinical suspicion is high.

If active H. pylori infection is suspected, a stool antigen test or urea breath test may provide more useful information.

Important note about the results

H. pylori IgA is an antibody test and should not be used alone to diagnose active H. pylori infection or to confirm eradication after treatment.

The clinical usefulness of H. pylori IgA can vary depending on the assay and patient population. For evaluation of active infection, tests that detect the organism or its products—particularly the stool antigen test or urea breath test—are generally preferred.

Results should be interpreted together with H. pylori IgG, symptoms, medical history, previous treatment, and other diagnostic findings. The reference range and cutoff supplied by the specific laboratory test manufacturer should always be used when interpreting the result.
